DAST-10 Questionnaire for Drug Abuse | Drug Addiction Screening Test
What Is the DAST-10 Questionnaire?
The Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10) is a trusted, 10-question self-assessment designed to screen for potential drug misuse (excluding alcohol and tobacco).
Originally developed in 1982, it remains a valuable tool for identifying the extent of drug-related problems and highlighting when further professional support might be needed.
Quick to complete but revealing in its results, the DAST-10 can shine a light on substance use issues that may otherwise go unaddressed.
How should I approach the DAST-10 questionnaire?
Answer each question based on your drug use over the past 12 months (not including alcohol or tobacco).
Respond with a simple YES or NO:
- Have you used drugs other than those required for medical reasons?
- Do you abuse more than one drug at a time?
- Are you always able to stop using drugs when you want to?
- Have you ever had blackouts or flashbacks because of drug use?
- Do you ever feel bad or guilty about your drug use?
- Does your spouse (or parents) ever complain about your involvement with drugs?
- Have you neglected your family because of your drug use?
- Have you engaged in illegal activities to obtain drugs?
- Have you experienced withdrawal symptoms when you stopped taking drugs?
- Have you had medical problems related to your drug use (e.g., memory loss, hepatitis, convulsions, bleeding)?
Scoring:
Each “YES” answer (except question 3) = 1 point.
For question 3, a “NO” = 1 point.
A higher score suggests a greater degree of drug-related problems.
What does your score mean?
- 0: No problems reported.
- 1–2: Low level of drug-related issues.
- 3–5: Moderate level — professional consultation recommended.
- 6–8: Substantial level — professional help strongly advised.
- 9–10: Severe level — immediate professional intervention needed.
It’s important to understand that the DAST-10 is not a diagnostic tool. Instead, it’s a first step towards recognising potential issues and seeking the right support.
Why does the DAST-10 matter?
Many people minimise their drug use or delay asking for help until serious problems arise.
